Washington State, not to be confused with Washington DC, is situated in the majestic Pacific Northwest. It’s famous for being one of the most incredibly beautiful states in the country.

Known as “The Evergreen State”, Washington is sprinkled with sprawling evergreen forests that can stretch for hundreds of miles. These forests are home to everyone’s favorite mythical giant, Sasquatch, otherwise known as Bigfoot. Allegedly he’s been spotted roaming around Washington an incredible 2,032 times (yikes lol).

The state is also home to two volcanoes, Mount St Helens and Mt Rainer, and has 449km of glaciers, more than any other state in mainland USA. But don’t worry about these exploding any time soon.

As you can imagine, the state’s natural beauty means that it is a highly sought-after destination to relocate to. This is reflected in the number, with 2017 to 2018 showing net migration (people moving in versus moving out) topped a whopping 83,700.

So what is Washington State all about (hint: it’s not just coffee, grunge music, and cloudy skies), and what do you need to know before making the move? Get comfortable and dive into our comprehensive guide on moving to The Evergreen State.

What Are The Best Places To Live In Washington?

When you hear the words ‘Washington State’ you perhaps automatically think of Seattle. It’s a vibrant city full of opportunities for people of all ages who want to get a taste of big city living while embracing the state’s focus on nature and the outdoors.

Seattle is an environmentally conscious city, full of coffee lovers and bicycle riders. It’s also one of the best cities in the country to own a dog, as they’re welcome inside many of the city’s shops, bars, and cafes.

Here are the best Seattle neighborhoods to call home.

Wallingford

Centrally located Wallingford is the perfect blend between a cozy suburb and a bustling urban center. There’s a great mix of pretty tree-lined streets and large family homes, along with super trendy bars and restaurants, record stores, and coffee shops.

The icing on the cake is Gas Works Park, which gives awesome panoramic views of downtown.

Like most places in Seattle, living here doesn’t come cheap. The median sale price on a home is $890k, and renting here costs an average of $2,980 per month.

picture of Seattle skyline with Space Needle Tower at dusk

North Admiral

North Admiral is one of the oldest communities in West Seattle and has a great mix of suburban block homes and beachfront mansions. It used to be considered a little too far out of town, but nowadays it’s super accessible since the opening of a large-scale bridge connecting it with downtown.

This all means there’s plenty of competition for homebuyers in North Admiral. The average price of a home here is $716k, and renting will cost around $2,820 per month.

Fremont

Fremont, the self-proclaimed Centre of the Universe, is a popular neighborhood packed with hippie clothing stores, trendy coffee shops, and modern condominiums. It’s a unique area with a relaxed, carefree vibe that’s especially popular with the alternative crowd.

Renting a place in Fremont will set you back around $2,628 per month, and the average home price here is $800k.

Ballard

The city of Ballard is a healthy mix of old apartment blocks, new condo developments, and leafy family-oriented neighborhoods, which all make for a varied community. Ballard Avenue is packed with trendy bars and restaurants that are popular with Seattle residents all over, especially on the weekends. There’s even a beach, where, when the sun makes an appearance, people gather to picnic, barbecue, kite-surf and take in the ocean air.

The average house price in Ballard is $760k, and renting costs an average of $2,296 a month.

Greenwood

Just 15 minutes from downtown, Greenwood is a great, slightly more affordable suburb that’s popular with young families. Its grid-like formation sets it apart from much of the rest of the city, and there’s a mix of older, traditional single-family homes, and modern construction. There’s plenty of family-friendly restaurants as well as a healthy dose of trendy cocktail bars and coffee shops.

The average house price here is $635k, and renting costs around $2490 a month.

Magnolia

Magnolia is a nature lover’s dream, full of forested areas that extend down to the coastline. It’s home to the picture-perfect Magnolia park, which has some pretty stunning panoramic views, as well as the much grander Discovery Park, the biggest park in Seattle, where you can find pretty stretches of beach, forest trails, and even a historic fort.

The average price of a home in Magnolia is $868k, and the average cost of renting is a pricey $3,056 per month.

Montlake

Montlake is a quiet, super affluent neighborhood, where the median household income is well over $200k per year. It’s bordered by Portage Bay and Montlake Cut to the north and Interlaken Park to the south.  Montlake is full of beautiful single-family homes, which are nestled among tranquil tree-lined streets.

Unsurprisingly, property is crazy expensive here. The average home costs more than $1.2 million, and the average renting price is a hefty $3,710 per month.

Madison Park

Even more upscale than Montlake is the coastal community of Madison Park. This is one of the most expensive areas in the whole of Seattle, and it’s easy to see why. The area is full of stunning beachfront mansions and luxurious family homes and is super popular with residents all over Seattle, who come here to soak up the elusive summer sun on the weekends.

Madison Park is definitely not the place for people on a tight budget; the average home price here is a staggering $1.8 million, and the median rent price is $3,753 per month.

Consider Western Washington (west of the Cascades)

Washington is an outdoor paradise. Water, national parks, mountains, hiking. It is beautiful, and all within a few hours of Seattle. Culturally, it depends on whether you are moving to the Seattle area or elsewhere. The cost of living in Seattle high, but it has all the amenities you’d expect from a large city. Theater, music, sports, dining, etc. Also, traffic in Seattle can be difficult, but if you can live close to where you work it is less of a problem. Job opportunities are plenty and our residents are extremely interesting and highly educated.

Elsewhere in Washington

Leaving the big city of Seattle behind, let’s take a look at what the rest of Washington State has to offer. In no particular order, the following represent some of the very best places to relocate…

Belleview

Not more than a pleasant 25-minute drive away from Seattle is Bellevue, which offers a quaint, small-town vibe, while also having plenty of entertainment options. There’s a great art museum, a sculpture garden, botanical gardens and a popular children’s science and tech museum.

It’s the fifth-largest city in the state, with a population of around 142,400 people. The average home price here is $562k. As you can see, as soon as you leave Seattle, things start to get a little more affordable.

Redmond

Redmond is famous for being the home of Microsoft which, unsurprisingly, is the largest employer in the city. It’s recently been voted the #1 best place to live in Washington by Niche.com, due in part to its proximity to Seattle, sitting just 16 miles away. This gives Redmond residents the easy option of commuting back and forth from the capital, without having to pay the sky-high cost of living there. The school system here is also one of the best in the country, so it’s a popular choice for families.

The average home price in Redmond is $485k.

Sammamish

Sammamish, a more expensive option than Redmond, sits next to the beautiful Lake Sammamish and has a population of 50,200 people. It’s still relatively close to Seattle, just 25 miles away, but feels worlds apart due to its natural peaceful setting. Sammamish also has a top-notch public school system and regularly ranks as one of the best places to raise a family in Washington State.

Living here doesn’t come cheap though; the average house price here is over $900k.

Bainbridge Island

Beautiful Bainbridge Island has some gorgeous scenery and is the perfect place for nature lovers. Residents can often be found fishing, hiking, sailing and generally enjoying the great outdoors. It’s conveniently located just next door to Seattle and was even once voted as the second-best place to live in the entire nation, in a poll conducted by CNN.

Again, the public school system here is fantastic, making it hugely popular with young families.

The cost of living is also relatively affordable compared with the capital, with an average house price of $548,000.

Tacoma

Tacoma, with its awesome views of Mount Rainer, is growing in popularity each year, as Seattle’s crazy house prices force people out to the neighboring cities. It’s famous for its Museum of Glass, which draws in visitors from around the state and beyond. Tacoma regularly ranks as one of the top cities in the US for young professionals; this is partly due to its much lower cost of living than Seattle. Here, you can rent a two-bedroom apartment for an average price of $1,200, and the average cost of a home is around $335,500, which, although high in national terms, seems like pocket change when looking at the prices across the state.

picture of Cozy patio area with comfort settees and fire pit. Deck with Puget Sound view. Tacoma, WA

Spokane

Spokane is known as one of the most beautiful cities in the state, with its views of the Selkirk Mountains in the distance and the picturesque Spokane River running through it. It’s just 92 miles from the US-Canada border, and within an hour’s drive from over 70 lakes and rivers, including the awesomely beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene.

The cost of living here is much lower than in many other parts of the state, with an average house price of $224,000.

Pullman

Pullman, sitting just next to the Idaho border, is another great option for those who don’t have money to burn. It’s a quaint, scenic city of 31,500 residents, and boasts a low crime rate, a highly ranked public school system, and is home to Washington State University. The college town vibes keep Pullman vibrant and bustling and mean there’s plenty of trendy bars, restaurants, and coffee shops in the downtown area.

The cost of living here is much cheaper than most of the rest of the state. An average house here costs $222,900, and you can rent a two-bedroom home for $710, which is actually below the national average. That’s pretty rare in a state as expensive as Washington.

Richland

Another much more affordable option is the city of Richland, with its numerous parks and endless options for enjoying nature. The city is home to 52,000 people, and has a very relaxed, small-town feel. Golfing is super popular here, with four 18-hole courses to choose from. The city boasts a low crime rate and a good public school system.

The average house price here is actually the cheapest on our list, at $207,100. Renting is also reasonable and, like Pullman, sits below the national average, at $886 per month.

Mercer Island

Located in King County, Mercer Island has a population of 124,000 people and is often voted as being one of the best and most desirable places to live in the state. Its claim to fame is being the most heavily populated freshwater island in the US, and it’s also home to one of the best public school systems in the state. There’s a huge variety of restaurants and bars, many of them playing live music on the weekends. People come here from all over to fish, swim, sail, and generally, kick back and enjoy the great outdoors.

Due to its popularity and ranking in the state, property here comes at a hefty price tag. The average home will set you back over $900k.

What Is The Job Market Like In Washington?

Business is booming in Washington State. It was voted the top state for business in the entire country back in 2017, and it’s still growing at a much faster rate than the national average today.

The state has become a massive and growing hub for innovative and cutting-edge start-ups in healthcare, finance, and technology, as well as other exciting businesses. The area is also home to a number of Fortune 500 companies including:

  • Amazon
  • Starbucks
  • Nordstrom
  • Weyerhaeuser
  • Expeditors International
  • Alaska Airlines
  • Costco Wholesale
  • Microsoft
  • Paccar
  • Expedia Group

No matter if you’re looking to climb the corporate ladder, open up your own business, or start a new career, making the move to Washington is a great first step.

Industries Across Washington

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is huge here!

One of Washington’s most famous exports is the brainchild of Bill Gates, Microsoft. Then there’re other legendary businesses such as Amazon, Expedia, and Zillow who all call Washington State home.

Global giants such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, Apple, and eBay also have engineering offices in the state. Overall, there are more than 220,000 people employed in tech-related jobs, from software engineers to game developers, and there’s no sign of the industry slowing down any time soon.

Washington definitely deserves its reputation as the second Silicon Valley.

Aerospace Industry

The state also leads the way in the Aerospace industry, with more than 1,400 companies providing jobs in the industry, building products, and services for the likes of Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier and Embraer. In fact, Boeing is Seattle’s top employer, with over 80,000 staff.

The Forest Products sector comes in at number three of Washington’s manufacturing sectors, and it’s been providing a plentiful assortment of jobs for state residents since as far back as 165 years ago. The industry is still going strong, as there’s always a demand for forest products such as paper, furniture, window frames and doors etc.

Farming and Agriculture

Farming is also big business here. Washington has an incredible 39,500 farms which grow over 300 different types of crops. The state’s most famous export is apples. Here are a couple of interesting apple stats from the Evergreen State…

  • There are over 175,000 acres of apple orchards in the state.
  • 6 out of every 10 apples consumed in the USA come from Washington State.
  • Washington grows over 2.5 million tons of apples per year!

While apples are obviously a big deal in Washington, farmers also produces cherries, pears, raspberries and hops in abundance.

Top Employers in Washington State

Aside from Boeing, which leads the way in terms of employee numbers, there are also the likes of Microsoft, who employ more than 20,000 people in the city of Redmond alone.

Walmart is another huge employer, with over 20,000 staff, along with the University of Washington, Amazon, and Joint Base Lewis-McChord, a US Airforce base with over 56,000 employees.

How Strong Is The Washington Real Estate Market?

As we’ve found out when exploring some of the top cities and neighborhoods in the state, the cost of buying a house in Washington often ranges from expensive to, well, even more expensive. That said, there are a number of reasons why making the investment into the move might make sense for you or your family. Not to mention there are plenty of areas where you can get more “bang for your buck” if you’re willing to tread off the beaten path a little bit when purchasing a house or renting.

The good news is that the local real estate market shows no signs of slowing down any time soon, as demonstrated by home values in the past year having shot up by 4.8%. According to Zillow’s calculations, they’ll continue to rise by 4% next year. So while housing may be expensive, a home purchase also represents a solid investment, increasing in value year over year.

A house in Washington spends an average of 75 days on the market, and the average cost of a home is over $400k. It’s a great market for sellers, but if you’re looking to buy for the first time in Washington State, you could end up paying through the nose. If you’re on a tight budget, it might be wise to consider looking outside of Seattle (which has an average home price of $760k).

How Much Does It Cost To Live In Washington State?

Renting vs Home Ownership

Similar to housing, the cost of renting can also vary widely depending on where you live, and Seattle is obviously a much more expensive place to rent in Washington State.

Here’s an example of how location can make or break your budget: A 2-bedroom apartment in Lincoln County, Washington, could cost you as little as $800 a month, but a 2-bedroom place in Seattle rents for an average of $2,500 per month.

Your best bet will be to “shop” around. Consider areas just outside of major metropolitan centers or with a longer commute to find more affordable options.

For budding professionals and those early in their career, “co-habiting” and “co-housing” are highly popular in the area, with innovative communal housing projects popping up in and around Seattle that might be worth a look.

Common Living Expenses Compared

Home purchase and renting costs make up the biggest difference in the cost of living in the state, but let’s take a look at some other monthly expenses to see how they compare to the rest of the country.

Groceries cost the average Seattle resident almost $400 per month, which is $75 more than the national average. A dozen eggs from the grocery store costs a pricey $3.

picture of Family with shopping cart in supermarket store

Healthcare is one of the few areas where living in Washington can work out cheaper. People spend an average of 17% less on their annual healthcare and insurance than the national average.

Utility bills are also on the more favorable end of the price scale, they cost around 25% less than the national average.

Gas will cost you more in Washington, with a gallon currently costing around $3.53, when the national average is only $2.90.

Sales tax is Washington is 6.5%, but local municipalities have the right to raise this higher. The highest sales tax in the state is as much as 10.4%.

Is Washington State A Good Place To Retire?

Washington can be a great choice of state to retire in, especially if you’re already relatively financially secure. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why so many retirees call the Evergreen State home…

  • The weather. While it definitely does rain a lot in Washington, if you don’t mind the drizzle, and love a more temperate climate, then it’s the perfect choice. Many residents say they don’t even need AC during the summer, and if you live in the western part of the state, the winters are surprisingly mild.
  • Washington has long been seen as a tax-friendly state for retirees, because it doesn’t tax social security or pension accounts. There’s also no inheritance tax for property worth less than $2.19 million.
  • Seattle was named as one of the top 12 cities to retire for good health, based on a study by Kiplinger. Along with world-class health care, there are some seriously amazing hiking trails, beautiful shorelines and an abundance of locally grown fresh fruit and veggies. It’s a winning combination to help you stay healthy in your retirement years.
  • Washington has an impressively low crime rate, with just 284 offenses per 100,000 people. You can spend your golden years in a state where you feel safe and secure.

What Are The People And Culture Like In Washington?

Overall, in true West Coast fashion, the people in Washington State live a pretty laid-back and relaxed lifestyle. There’s a huge focus on enjoying the outdoors, and residents often spend their weekends hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking and surfing.

picture of Woman on a kayak is paddeling in the ocean during a vibrant sunset.

It’s a culturally diverse state, with large communities of Native American’s, Asians, Hispanics, and Scandinavians. This diversity means there’s plenty of exciting cultural events and festivals to get involved in.

Overall, Washington isn’t known as a particularly religious state, with only 35% of people claiming to be religious in the most recent census. Like many of its west coast neighbors, it’s also a pretty liberal state overall, especially when it comes to social issues. The environment is also a hot topic in Washington, and in general, more people recycle, take public transport and ride their bicycles than many other parts of the country.

Washingtonians are well known for being friendly, polite and welcoming to newcomers, however, they can sometimes be viewed as being a little more reserved than people from other parts of the US.

You can even stay overnight in the cozy cabins and lodges to enjoy a break away from the hustle and bustle of urban lifestyle to enjoy the outdoors and reconnect with nature.

  • The Mount St Helens National Monument is an awesome way to gain a perspective on the power of mother nature and the sheer scale of the damage caused by the volcano’s 1980 eruption. There’s a great visitor’s center there where you can learn all about the geology and natural phenomena of the place through exhibits, tours and videos.
  • Finally, taking a Washington State Ferry is a great way to take in the amazing views, as well as mingle with the locals who use this as an essential form of transport over the waters. You can hop on and off in downtown Seattle, as well as Mukilteo, Clinton and Bainbridge Island.

The Pros And Cons Of Living In Washington State

So now that we’ve taken a look at what Washington has to offer, let’s examine the pros and cons of moving to the state.

  • Washington has a super low crime rate, beating the vast majority of the rest of the US in police statistics, making it one of the safest places to live in the country.
  • The weather, although rainy, is mostly temperate throughout the year, especially towards the western side of the state. A lot of people don’t even use air conditioning during the summer months.

Cons

  • It’s expensive to live in Washington. House prices are well above the national average, especially in Seattle, and renting is also much, much higher than in most of the US.
  • There’s a high sales tax in Washington. As income tax doesn’t exist, the sales taxes are overall much higher than most places in the US.
  • Washington is due for a large earthquake. Like the rest of its west coast neighbors, western Washington State is in the danger zone, and there’s no predicting when a large earthquake might strike.

Strange Laws And Fun Facts About Living In Washington

Strange Laws

Every state has its fair share of interesting and bizarre laws that can seem a little ridiculous. Let’s take a look at what Washington has to offer.

  • It’s illegal to harass Bigfoot. Even though nobody knows for sure if he actually exists, he’s protected by the state, just in case.
  • Criminals must make themselves known. Apparently, motorists must report to the local police chief when entering any town and share their criminal intentions before acting on them. We’re not sure how effective this law is, considering most criminals usually like to avoid police stations if at all possible…
  • Don’t spread your germs. The lawmakers in Washington didn’t just want to leave it up to common courtesy to protect the public from the spread of germs. It’s actually illegal to enter a public place if you have a communicable disease, and that even includes the common cold. It’s a pretty great excuse to stay home and rest next time you get sick.
  • In Wilbur, Washington, your horse must be good looking. If your horse is deemed as ugly, it’s an offense to ride it. We’re not sure who gets to decide the attractiveness of a horse, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
  • In Lyden, Washington, you can’t drink and dance at the same time. Establishments can only offer one or the other.
  • Life jackets are not allowed in Spokane, Washington. If the area around the river is restricted to swimmers, it’s actually illegal to wear one at all.

Fun Facts About the State

To wrap up our overview of moving to Washington, let’s look at some fun facts from The Evergreen State.

  • It’s the only state to be named after a US president
  • Washington has more glaciers than any other mainland state
  • The richest man in the US, Bill Gates, is from Washington, and still lives there today.
  • Seattle is the birthplace of Jimi Hendrix
  • The oldest working gas station in America is in Washington State.
  • Washington State produces more apples than anywhere else in the US.
  • Before Washington was a state, the area was called Columbia. They changed the name to Washington supposedly so people wouldn’t confuse it with the District of Columbia (which, of course, they still do).

1. UBoxes Moving Blankets – Textile Skins

picture of UBoxes Moving Blankets - Textile Skins

Why We Like These Moving Blankets

These moving blankets fall into the DIY category because they are not meant for long term or extreme protection. They are what we would call “good enough” for a couple moves and then you can discard them or reevaluate their condition for future use. But you should not expect them as a repeat moving supply. The good news is they will protect your belongings at the most affordable price point on our list of top moving blankets. Check out the features below and see if they meet your requirements and save yourself some money.

Most consumers who are one time movers will agree that the thick, professional blankets are to expensive for them to justify the cost. These cheap moving blankets are a worthwhile alternative to our #1 DIY mover choice the “UBoxes Moving Blankets – Textile Skins” above. These will protect your furniture and belongings at a low cost price point but sometimes it has been observed that holes or tears can develop even during the first move they are used in.

Where To Buy

Pro Tip: Heavy Duty Dollies VS Lightweight Dollies

There are two different types of moving strap products available today.

  1. Lightweight Hand Trucks & Dollies – this category is for transporting bulky items but not necessarily heavy items by 1 person. The moving trucks we recommend in this category are made out of strong materials but usually are less heavy and might even fold up into a compact footprint for ease of storage. The types of items that are typically loaded onto them are the following:
    • Portable air conditioners
    • Microwave ovens
    • Air Purifiers
    • Televisions
    • Small Vanities
    • End Tables
    • Coffee Tables
    • Cardboard Moving Boxes
    • Plastic Moving Boxes
    • Luggage

  2. Heavy Duty Hand Trucks & Dollies – this category is for the majority of items that would require a dolly for ease of lifting and transport by 1 person. Products we recommend here are the best hand trucks you can buy and will last for many years. The heaviest of items can be loaded onto them such as the following:
    • Clothes Washers
    • Clothes Dryers
    • Ovens
    • Refrigerator
    • Dishwashers
    • Bureaus
    • Bed Headboards/Footboards
    • Couches
    • Sleeper Sofas

Here Is All 10 of the BEST Hand Trucks & Dollies

3. Milwaukee Flow Back Handle Hand Truck

picture of Milwaukee Flow Back Handle Hand Truck

Why We Like This Hand Truck For Heavy Duty Use

The Milwaukee 47109 Flow Back Handle Hand Truck is our recommendation for the cheapest hand truck. Don’t get us wrong, you can find even cheaper ones available BUT they are not quality products. This hand truck is the perfect blend of high quality basic features and low cost, which makes for the best valued dolly you can buy for moving appliances such as stoves or even refrigerators or furniture (up to 600lbs) that would normally require two or more people.

We don’t want to mislead you, this is a no frills model without all the extra features that higher priced hand trucks will cost you. BUT, they really get the basic features right to get the job done. The one feature that we really enjoyed is the flow back handle which allows for ease of use and better ergonomics when lifting your load up for transport.

If you want a cheap moving truck that will not leave you disappointed then be sure to check out this model by Milwaukee.

4. Cosco 4-in-1 Folding Series Hand Truck

picture of COSCO 4-in-1 Folding Series Hand Truck

Why We Like This Hand Truck For Heavy Duty Use

Next up is a brand that is a powerhouse in the hand truck industry, the Cosco 4-in-1 is a very good heavy duty dolly. This hand truck coverts in 4 different uses (2-wheel upright, 4-wheel cart, 4-wheel platform cart or assisted 4-wheel hand truck), which is 1 more than their 3-in-1 model. The main difference being the folding floor plate which allows for longer and larger loads when and increased storage when in cart mode.

There really isn’t much that you can’t move with this model with the manufacturer boasting 800lbs of capacity as a 2 wheeled cart and 1000lbs of capacity as a 4 wheeled cart. However, we found that you shouldn’t plan on that much weight with this model. Regardless that much weight in tow, it’s a good design that the wheels are flat free so you don’t have to worry about them popping on you.

In terms of maneuverability, the Cosco 4-in-1 features a flow back looped handle that allows for increased control and better ergonomics.

If you are looking for a quality hand truck that can convert into 4 different modes of operation (2-wheel upright, 4-wheel cart, 4-wheel platform cart or assisted 4-wheel hand truck) check out this model by Cosco.

Key Features

  • Purpose: 2-wheel upright, 4-wheel cart, 4-wheel platform cart or assisted 4-wheel hand truck
  • Capacity: 1000 pounds as 4 wheel cart, 800 pounds as 2 wheel hand truck
  • Wheels: Flat free wheels
  • Construction: Aluminum Frame
  • Weight: 29.2 pounds
  • Dimensions: 45.8 x 20 x 36.2 inches
  • Adjustable Height: No
  • Color: Silver
  • Warranty: 10 Year Limited

5. Cosco 3-in-1 Aluminum Hand Truck

picture of Cosco 3-in-1 Aluminum Hand Truck

Why We Like This Hand Truck For Heavy Duty Use

The Cosco 3-in-1 Aluminum Hand Truck is the alternative version of their 4-in-1 product. The biggest difference being the floor plate does not fold down. This might be important for you if you will not have abnormally long loads that you need to transport in cart mode. The floor plate that folds down is a moveable component and not having that functionality can make the hand truck more durable for some uses.

The price point of this dolly is also a little bit less expensive than the 4-in-1 but only by a negligible amount. You should consider this hand truck for heavy duty assisted lifting and moving of appliances such as diswashers, washers and dryers, stoves and refrigerators or moving boxes. The same capacities apply as the 4-in-1 but like we said before, we don’t recommend you putting 800lbs as a 2 wheeled cart or 1000lbs of as a 4 wheeled cart. That might be too much load for this hand truck.

Key Features

  • Purpose: 2-wheel upright, 4-wheel cart, or assisted 4-wheel hand truck
  • Capacity: 1000 pounds as 4 wheel cart, 800 pounds as 2 wheel hand truck
  • Wheels: Flat free wheels
  • Construction: Aluminum Frame
  • Weight: 27.5 pounds
  • Dimensions: 46.9 x 19.8 x 33.2 inches
  • Adjustable Height: No
  • Color: Silver
  • Warranty: 10 Year Limited

6. Harper Trucks Super-Steel Convertible Hand Truck

picture of Harper Trucks Super-Steel Convertible Hand Truck

Why We Like This Hand Truck For Heavy Duty Use

The Harper Trucks Super-Steel Convertible Hand Truck is what we call the “Mean Green” dolly because of it’s green color and it’s strength. This is similar to our cheapest recommendation the Milwaukee Flow Back Handle Hand Truck because it is a some what no frills product. However, this one has some really nice features that the Milwaukee does not have but those features come at a higher price point.

First, this hand truck is a dual purpose 2 wheel dolly and 4 wheel cart that comes with 10″ flat-free solid rubber wheels and 5 inches durable swivel casters. In the horizontal cart mode it can hold up to 700 lbs and in the vertical dolly mode up to 600 lbs of capacity. The 10″ wheels have fenders in front of them to protect the items you are transporting against damage from rubbing against the wheels, this is actually a really nice feature.

So this is no doubt a work horse that will move just about all your bulky items including appliances and furniture.

Key Features

  • Purpose: 2 Wheel Dolly and 4 Wheel Cart
  • Capacity: 700-Pound horizontal capacity, 600-Pound vertical capacity
  • Wheels: 10-inch Flat-Free Solid Rubber Wheels and 5-inch swiveling casters
  • Construction: Steel frame
  • Weight: 33.8 pounds
  • Dimensions: 18″ x 20.5″ x 50″
  • Adjustable Height: Two position telescoping handle adjusts up to 62-Inch in height
  • Color: Green
  • Warranty: No

Best Lightweight Hand Trucks

1. Cosco Shifter Folding Hand Truck and Dolly

picture of Cosco Shifter Folding Hand Truck and Dolly

Why We Like This Hand Truck For Lightweight Use

The top recommendation on our list of best hand trucks for moving in the lightweight category is the Cosco Shifter Folding Hand Truck and Dolly. As we said previously, Cosco is a reputable company in the dolly business and this model is a major part of why they have such a good reputation. In fact, this model has a 5 year warranty from the manufacturer so you know they stand behind this product.

Keep in mind, dollies in this category are not cut out to transport very heavy items such as many appliances refrigerators or stoves or heavy furniture such as bureaus or sleeper sofas. However, for small appliances such as TVs, portable air conditioners, moving boxes and other bulky items they are a very efficient way to move things around or loading up a moving truck.

This particular hand truck is a very affordable multi position or dual use dolly. It can be used as an upright hand truck or horizontal cart and folds up to a very slim and flat rectangle shape that can be easily stored virtually anywhere. Transformation between the two configurations (truck or cart) is nearly effortless and does not require any special tools.

Very few people have anything negative to say about this hand truck as long as they understand it is not for the most extreme loads. Definitely consider purchasing this moving dolly for your lightweight moving jobs.

Key Features

  • Purpose: 2-Wheel, Upright Hand Truck or into a 4-wheel Cart
  • Capacity: 300 pounds
  • Wheels: Small plastic wheels
  • Construction: Durable Steel Frame
  • Weight: 14.92 pounds
  • Dimensions: 49.25″ x 16.625″ x 13.75″

2. Harper Trucks Magna Cart Folding Hand Truck

picture of Harper Trucks Magna Cart Folding Hand Truck

Why We Like This Hand Truck For Lightweight Use

The Magna Cart Ideal Folding Hand Truck is another very popular dolly in the lightweight category because of 4 main features. The telescoping handle that extends to 40″, an included bungee cord to help secure large loads, the TPR comfort grip and the rugged steel frame with a large 11in. x 15in. baseplate.

This model will also fold up to a small and slim footprint for easy storage and transport between jobs. Keep in mind the steel frame and solid rubber wheels are very durable up to a 160 pound load capacity. As long as you don’t expect to go over that threshold this is a great option for you.

Key Features

  • Purpose: Foldable hand truck for moving lightweight boxes, luggage, etc.
  • Capacity: 160 pounds
  • Wheels: Solid rubber wheels
  • Construction: 19mm steel frame
  • Weight: 9.65 pounds
  • Dimensions: 16.5 x 16 x 39 inches
  • Adjustable Height: No
  • Color: Silver
  • Warranty: 12 months parts / 12 months labor

picture of Harper Trucks Glass Filled Nylon Convertible Hand Truck and Dolly (Lightweight)

Why We Like This Hand Truck For Lightweight Use

Another high quality dolly from Harper Trucks is their Glass Filled Nylon Convertible Hand Truck and Dolly. This one doesn’t fold up into a slim footprint like others in this category but is affordable and a dual purpose truck and cart that will not leave you disappointed.

It is very sturdy but is not heavy to pick up because it is made out of the exclusive I-Beam Glass Filled Nylon Plastic Frame that is 30% lighter than steel and designed for maximum strength. If you are looking for a hand truck to move up to 400 pounds and is easy to pickup because if it’s low weight of just over 19 pounds, you should take a look at this dolly.

picture of Mount-It! Folding Hand Truck and Dolly

Why We Like This Hand Truck For Lightweight Use

This particular dolly is a solid option for loads up to 264 pounds and the unit itself only weighs less than 13 pounds. The bungee cord that is included is 6.7 feet long and is a nice feature to secure your load onto the hand truck so it doesn’t fall off during transport. Perhaps the best part of this offering is the affordable prices on quality products they offer. After all, being one of the largest companies in the world, they would not put their name on a product that was not high quality. Their moving boxes are cheap but not cheaply made.

When purchasing these moving boxes from Amazon you can take advantage of your Prime membership for free 2-day shipping. We highly recommend Amazon Basics moving boxes for the economical mover.

Why We Like These Moving Box Kits

Moving box kits are great for convenience at a low cost price point but they don’t always include everything you need to move your belongings. However, Box Engines moving box kits allow you to create a customized kit that will exactly meet your requirements. You can select multiple sized boxes and types including all the required supplies.

In terms of the boxes they are really sturdy and made out of corrugated cardboard and have an edge crush test” or “ECT” of 32 or 44 if you go with the premium boxes but those will cost you a bit more money and not for the bargain shopper.

As mentioned earlier, Box Engine’s low priced moving box kits are shipped same day (for free) and include a 30 day return policy. If you are looking for a customizable solution to pack up your belongings for your move, this is the solution for you.

Bankers Box Moving Box Kits

picture of bankers box low-priced moving box kits

Why We Like These Moving Box Kits

These are probably the most convenient moving boxes you can buy in the low-cost category. Why are we making such a bold claim? That’s because they have hand holes in the sides which makes them easy to pick up and carry. Also, they’re really strong with thick & sturdy cardboard, not the super thick type that would inflate the price but just thick enough to effectively carry the load. Also, the boxes come with a convenient lid instead of having to force fold those traditional flaps found on typical moving boxes.

The kits come in multiple sized boxes and you can choose between kits that include both small and medium boxes or a kit that also includes large boxes. These are not the cheapest boxes you can buy but are far from the highest price ones but they have a lot of quality features to make them a reasonable price point.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Tape-Free Assembly
  • Easy Carry Handles
  • Multiple Sizes
  • Convenient Lift Off Lid
  • Strong Quality Corrugated Board
  • Recyclable
  • Made In The USA
Cons
  • No Customization Options
  • Requires Assembly
  • Costs A Bit More
  • Doesn’t Include Packing Materials

The fastest growing jobs without a degree

One of the great things about the state of Georgia is that you don’t necessarily need a college degree to be successful and live your best life! If you don’t yet have a degree, or you are still working towards receiving one, you will be able to work and afford a great place to live! Having said that, take a look at…

Statewide:

  1. Respiratory Therapist
  2. Office Supervisor
  3. Sales Representative
  4. Dental Hygienist
  5. Tech Support
  6. Autobody/Car Mechanic
  7. Paralegal/Legal Assistant

Infrastructure and global reach

Georgia is the number one leading state when it comes to US distribution and supply chain hubs, as well as the number two leading state in infrastructure and access to global markets. An impressive feat.

In fact, Atlanta Georgia’s airport is known to be the busiest airport in the world! Aside from having the busiest airport on the planet, the Port of Savannah is the biggest port in the United States as it reaches 80% of the entire country!

Something else that you may find quite convenient, is that Georgia has access to the fastest information networks in the world. In other words, they are home to the fastest internet ports and fiber optic infrastructure, giving you access to obtaining information as fast as humanly possible!

Furthermore, when it comes to traveling, there is no need to worry about those potholes and cracked roads; for Georgia’s road conditions are in great shape — only 5% of the state’s roads are in poor condition, which is more than we can say for most other states in the country!

Minimum wage

The state of Georgia has a rather unique minimum wage structure. If you happen to be a student, or under the age of 20, the minimum wage is set at $5.15/hr, which is actually below the federal minimum of $7.25/hr. If you do not fit into one of these exceptions, the minimum wage remains at $7.25/hr.

Georgia’s minimum wage may seem like an unlivable wage at first glance, but Georgia has something that most other states do not; and that is, a minimum wage for overtime work. If you work over the full time 40 hours a week, it is mandatory that you are paid accordingly. For example, each hour of overtime you work entitles you to a minimum of $10.88/hr — that is over double the standard hourly pay!

Another interesting aspect worth mentioning that involves GA’s minimum wage laws is that if you are employed by the restaurant industry (where tips are involved in your pay) the minimum hourly wage still remains at $5.15/hr. This is way higher than the $2.38/hr that most states place as a minimum when it comes to any industry where tips are involved.

Unemployment rate

The unemployment rate in GA currently sites at around 3.4%, which is lower than the national average of 3.6%. The good news is that this rate is the lowest rate in the history of Georgia with the outlook on the state’s economy looking stronger than ever. The state’s economy is continuously growing and improving, which translates to better opportunities, increased wages, and improved property values.

Thanks to the education industry, the transportation industry, and the leisure and hospitality industry, it is predicted that Georgia’s economy will continue to strengthen and grow well in the future!

How Much Does It Cost To Live In Georgia?

For the most part, the cost of living in GA is below the national average. When it comes to utilities, it’s a basic tradeoff for how affordable the housing is, and it still leaves you with plenty of room to budget. But even with the high cost of utilities and transportation, the state is still quite affordable. Let’s look at some specifics as compared to the national averages below.

The cost of living in ga compared to the national average

*The National Average is at 100

  • Groceries — 95.5 (4.5% lower)
  • Health — 95.5 (4.5% lower)
  • Housing — 80.7 (19.3% lower)
  • Utilities — 103.2 (3.2% higher)
  • Transportation — 105.1 (5.1% higher)
  • Misc — 94.8 (5.2% lower)

As you can see, overall most living expenses in the state are below the national average by a good margin, making this an attractive area to move to for an affordable, yet high quality of life.

State taxes

State income tax

Georgia has a simple system for income tax — it is a system that ranges from 1% to 6% and is based on your individual monthly income.

Here is a simple chart that explains how the state taxes work:
  • $0—$750 = 1% tax
  • $751—$2250 = 2% tax
  • $2251—$3750 = 3% tax
  • $3751—$5250 = 4% tax
  • $5251—$7000 = 5% tax
  • $7001 or more = 6% tax

This system is based on income thresholds while still accommodating the less wealthy and their financial needs.

Sales tax

Georgia’s sales tax is at a mere 4%, which is an extreme drop from the national average of 7.5% in sales tax! Furthermore, not only are the property taxes at a lie rate of 0.9%, but once you hit the age of 62, you are no longer required to pay property taxes at all! This is great news, especially for those who are planning to save for retirement or for those who simply need that money to make ends meet.

Georgia gives its residents a lot of room to breathe when it comes to the basic cost of living. So if you happen to be worried about money or are struggling in the financial department (as most people generally are), GA is most likely the state that will help you get out of that downspiraling financial hole.

It is also perhaps the only state that allows the idea of “work hard, play hard” to become a solid reality!

How Is The Georgia Real Estate Market?

Overall the state’s real estate market has remained relatively strong, increasing in value at an average rate of +2.77% per year over the last decade. That said, housing in the state still remains very affordable for people who want to purchase a house. This healthy real estate market has been largely driven by increasing job opportunities and growing industry within the state.

Georgia’s statewide averages

*Estimates may vary over time

  • Median Home Value — $195,000
  • Median Listing Price — $259,900
  • Median Sale Price —$199,400
  • Median Sq Ft — $122/sq ft
  • Median Rent Price — $1000/mo
  • Average Days On Market — 42
  • Airbnb Occupancy Rate — 60%

Facts and figures:

  • Total Home Appreciation Value Since 2000: +23%
  • Average Annual Home Appreciation: +2.77%
  • 66% of homes are single family
  • 4% of residents own vs rent
  • 6% of residents rent vs own

Georgia’s real estate bests

The state, like most states, has a very well-defined real estate market cycle that waxes and wanes throughout the year.

picture of Beautiful historic, traditional home in Marietta, Georgia

Best time to buy

If you’re looking to buy, between the months of Jan-March are your best bets. This is the “off-season” as far as real estate is concerned and you’ll often be able to negotiate better closing prices while also not having to worry about moving fast over bidding wars.

Best time to sell (and worst time to buy)

If you’re looking for a deal, April through August is not when you want to go home shopping. These months are when the GA real estate market tends to heat up, starting in April and peaking between June-July. Expect higher prices and more competition if you need to make your move late spring through late summer as Georgia home sellers expect top dollar.

Best locations to invest

Interested in making your money work for you? The following represent some of the hottest areas to invest in, ripe with opportunity and forecasted to continue growth and development with the promise of high returns. As with any investment, always do your due diligence, and buyer beware.

  • Locust Grove
  • Hampton
  • Stone Mountain
  • Clarkson
  • Morrow

Best market locations

Is business on your mind? Then the following areas represent some of Georgia’s best markets to work and make connections in.

  • Atlanta
  • Savannah
  • Roswell
  • Augusta
  • Athens

Keep in mind that a growing economy equals a strong real estate market, and as we mentioned before, Georgia’s economy is at an all-time high and growing at a rapid speed! Another aspect that helps to boost GA’s real estate market is the fact that the state’s mortgage rates are extremely low. So, when it comes to the real estate market as a whole, it looks like Georgia has its economy under control!

This east coast state has seen the arrival of 848,000 new residents since the 2010 census, which is an 8.9% population increase. While that number includes births and not just immigrants, it is still estimated that three out of every four new residents are moving in from other states and countries.

Upon inspection, it’s pretty easy to see why so many people are moving here. While North Carolina may be the famed land of sweet barbecue and thrilling college basketball, it’s a state that’s filled with culture, innovation, and job opportunities. There are many employment possibilities if you work in research or higher education, but manufacturing and other industries are also thriving.

Still debating a move to this east coast state? Read on to discover what North Carolina has to offer before buying a house or renting here.

Where Are The Best Places To Live In North Carolina?

Let’s take a look at a few of N. Carolina’s gems that we feel are worth consideration.

In no particular order…

The Triangle

You don’t have to be a geometry major to appreciate this shapely-named area in NC.

“The Triangle” represents an area of North Carolina that features a low crime rate, great local culture, and ideal job opportunities. These cities and suburbs are growing like crazy—and for good reason!

Most of these areas are in the three cities that make up the famed Research Triangle of North Carolina. The Triangle refers to a literal triangular area between three major research universities: North Carolina State University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The main cities that these universities are in are Raleigh, Durham, and the town of Chapel Hill. Thanks to its status as a major research hub in the United States, the Triangle is full of opportunities—even if you’re not in academia or research.

So put that lab coat away and give the area a tour to find out for yourself. We bet you’ll like what you find.

Raleigh

The city of Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina, and it’s perfect for young professionals who seek the buzz of city life. The schools in the area are good, and the cost of living is relatively low for a large city: the median home value is $280,000, and on average this will buy you a three- or four-bedroom home. This is higher than most of North Carolina, but very low compared to other parts of the United States. About 86% of the workforce in Raleigh are employed in white-collar jobs.

picture of Raleigh, North Carolina, USA downtown city skyline.

Durham

Home to Duke University (Go Blue Devils!), the city of Durham is a major hub for art and diversity. It has earned the title of “Foodiest Small Town in America” from Bon Appetit.

Durham has the charm of a small town while still being a city, and as of 2017, it held the number two spot for the fastest-growing city in the state. Living in the area also proves to be a great value: the median list price per square foot in Durham is $153. In comparison, the average price per square foot in the general Durham-Chapel Hill Metro area comes in at around $161.The value of homes is rising as demand increases, but the average single-family house will still cost you around $233,800, depending on the neighborhood.

Durham is a very ethnically diverse city. The majority of residents report their race as Black or African-American. The second-largest racial group is White. Durham is also one of the most educated cities in the nation, with 48.80% of adults holding at least a bachelor’s degree.

Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill sits right on the cusp between being a town and being a city. While the University of North Carolina gives the area a big jolt of life, the area still retains the feel of a town. The architecture and trees that inhabit central Chapel Hill are quaint and comforting. This area is, however, expensive to live in: the average home value comes in at $388,800, which is high compared to the other two cities in the Triangle and on par with some of the most expensive markets in the country. Still, for many people, the perks are worth it.

Chapel Hill is home to a huge scientific community. A whopping 94.52% of workers hold white-collar jobs. It is also a diverse community — 15.71% of residents were born in another country. This is all thanks to the local University of North Carolina, which heavily affects the demographics of the Chapel Hill community. Not only are there many college students living here, but many choose to remain even after graduation.

What About The Job Market In North Carolina?

North Carolina’s unemployment rate has hovered at around four percent for the past several years, placing it in alignment with the national unemployment rate give or take. Not bad at all.

In general, employment opportunities abound in NC, particularly if you’re looking to work in medicine, aerospace and defense, or food manufacturing. These particular industries host a number of companies that have a firm base of operations in North Carolina.

But don’t worry, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist or the doctor your mother always wanted you to be in order to take advantage. The fact is, even aerospace businesses and hospitals need administrators, marketing, accounting, and so on.

Medicine

Medicine and medical research are a booming industry in North Carolina, particularly in the Triangle. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nine out of the ten highest-paying jobs in North Carolina are related to a medical field. If you’ve been considering a career change or a new industry to hone your craft, medical-related businesses abound in NC.

The biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries are thriving thanks to the many top-tier universities in the area. In fact, the Triangle boasts the country’s highest concentration of Tier 1 research universities. This field has experienced a 31-percent growth since 2001.

The top biotech and pharma companies in the state include BASF, Novartis, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, and LabCorp. This industry as a whole has provided jobs for nearly 60,000 residents of North Carolina. In total, there are over 600 life science companies operating in North Carolina.

Aerospace and Defense

You don’t have to be a rocket man or an astrophysicist to take advantage of opportunities in this job market. Aside from medical research, aerospace manufacturing is another fast-growing industry in the area. It seems like a logical development, seeing as the Wright brothers flew the first plane in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

The transportation and research structures that already exist in the state lend themselves very well to all sorts of defense research and manufacturing. Today, there are more than 460,000 manufacturing workers in NC, making labor plentiful and encouraging companies in this industry to set up shop in the area. In fact, North Carolina has the nation’s tenth-largest manufacturing workforce.

Some of the key aerospace and defense companies operating in North Carolina include ATI, Collins Aerospace, GE Aviation, Honeywell, and Lockheed Martin.

Food Processing and Manufacturing

Enjoy food? Although you might not get to eat on the job, but that doesn’t mean you can’t help get scrumptious morsels from plant to store shelve. The food and agricultural industries are also an important part of the state’s backbone. North Carolina has the second-largest animal processing and manufacturing cluster in the United States.

Butterball, Campbells, and Tyson are three major food processing and manufacturing companies that have large operations in North Carolina.

Other Fields and Opportunities

Even if you’re not a professional in any of the above fields, there are bound to be many employment opportunities for you in this state. North Carolina boasts the lowest corporate income tax rate in the country, which attracts many companies and encourages them to bring their business and jobs into the state.

I would highly recommend moving to North Carolina!

I’m a small business owner currently located in Charlotte, NC and I absolutely love living and working in the “Old North State.” From a professional perspective, there is abundant talent and opportunity in the finance, technology, healthcare and manufacturing industries. Our company manufactures products locally and the network of small businesses across the state is phenomenal. From a logistics standpoint, North Carolina is centrally located on the East Coast; with ports, rail lines and major interstates, there is excellent transportation infrastructure to move product across the state and around the country with ease.”

How Is The North Carolina Real Estate Market?

No doubt moving can be stressful. The last thing you need to fret about is finding a place to live, yet before making the move you’ll need to do just that. The good news is that in general, housing in North Carolina is cheaper than the rest of the east coast. This makes the coastal state a bargain while still being able to take advantage of all the coastal area has to offer. The median value of homes in the state runs right around $178,535.

For reference, in Virginia—North Carolina’s neighbor to the north—the median home value is $277,587. About 37 percent of homes in North Carolina are valued in the range of $118,000 to $237,000. One notable exception is Chapel Hill, a town that regularly figures in lists of the most expensive neighborhoods in the United States.

Buying Vs Renting

What about buying vs renting? Well, right around 63% of homes in North Carolina are bought, not rented, with around 65% percent of homes being single-family. If you’re ready to set down permanent roots just yet, nearly half the housing market consists of rentals, providing plenty of options to explore while you’re figuring out where your “forever” home might be.

The Best Areas for Value

Although Concord and Cary are the cheapest desirable cities to live in North Carolina, Durham is also a strong contender. About 70% of Durham residents spend 30% or less of their income on housing. In fact, that’s a trend among these low-cost North Carolina cities: housing is cheap, but average household income is high, leading to affordable neighborhoods that people want to live in.

picture of a nice neighborhood in North Carolina

New Builds vs Old Construction

Most homes in North Carolina are relatively new. In fact, it’s estimated that about half of the homes in the state were built between 1970 and 1999, and nearly 25% are even newer. This is great news if you’re looking to buy a home, as newer houses present fewer problems. Most new homes are built up to code, decreasing the likelihood of expensive repairs and adjustments being needed.

The Best Time to Buy a Home in NC

According to local reals estate data, those homes listed between May 1st through the 15th sold for up to $2500 more and up to 11 days faster. If higher prices and more competition from other buyers isn’t your thing, aim to start your home search over the winter. Schedule permitting, if you can close on a home between January and February you stand to save up to 10% off of the average sales price.

How Much Does It Cost To Live In North Carolina?

If you’re contemplating a move to NC, one of the major questions that you’ll no doubt be asking is how much it costs to live in the state. In other words, what is the cost of living like as compared to the rest of the country?

Overall, the cost of living in North Carolina consistently comes in below the national average in several main categories. While there are some areas that are exceptions to the rule, North Carolina is a good choice if you want to get a big bang for your buck.

State Taxes

If there’s one thing we can’t escape in life, its taxes. Let’s take a closer look at some of NC’s taxes that you could expect to be subject to should you decide to move here…

Income Tax

North Carolina operates on a flat-rate state income tax with an effective rate of 5.4999%. In lay terms, this means that everyone pays an identical rate no matter their status or level of income. In order to determine your state income tax liability in NC, simply multiply your taxable income by 0.05499.

Sales Tax

The state sales tax rate in NC is currently 4.75%. However, the total amount of “sales tax” that you will pay at the cash registrar may vary depending on the local municipality you’re in. For example, additional local sales tax in some counties can bring the total sales tax rate up to around 6.75-7.5%.

Gas Tax

For most of us, our gas-guzzling vehicles represent a significant monthly expense to fuel up, especially if we have significant commutes to and from work. In NC, the state tax on gas currently sits at 35.4 cents per gallon, with total prices on gas for 2019 coming in just under the national average.

Cost of Housing

Housing costs, as mentioned above, lean towards the affordable side of the scale. This doesn’t just apply to buying a house, either—the average price of rent in North Carolina is significantly lower than the national average.

Data presented by Neighborhood Scout reveals that the median home value in N. Carolina sits right around $174,000. Although this price is inflated in larger cities, deals can be found even lower in more rural areas, meaning that there are lots of deals to be had at every income level. This is likely why so many NC residents are homeowners 963%). Best of all, home values seem to be on the rise in NC, with data showing that between 2017-2018 home values increased by an impressive 7.5%.

As far as rent goes, rates come in well below the national median. According to statistics gathered by Best Places, a two-bedroom apartment in North Carolina will run you about $875, whereas the national average for a two-bedroom apartment falls at around $1148.

Cost of Food

We all have to eat right? According to the MIT Living Wage Calculator, a single adult in North Carolina will likely spend $249.50 per month on food. A family of two adults and two children will spend $735. This is for the bare necessities.

picture of Family with shopping cart in supermarket store

The price of groceries varies by area, of course, but these food prices are a bit below the national average. According to BestPlaces, the cost of groceries in North Carolina comes in at 96.5, slightly below the national average denoted by 100.

Cost of Utilities

Utilities make up a big part of our monthly budgets, from pumping in cool AC during blistering hot summer months, to making sure you stay warm and cozy all winter long. According to Numbero, their data shows that the average monthly utility bills in Charlotte, including electricity, heating, water and refuse come in at about $169.79 per 900-ish square feet of property. This is slightly higher than the national average but not by much.

Is North Carolina A Good Place To Retire?

If you’re nearing the age of retirement, or already there, you may be considering a move to a more “retiree” friendly state. Climate, neighbors, activities, and cost of living are all things you may want to consider. And you should. After all, now is the time to (hopefully) take a breather and relax.

NC – Ranked One of the Best

When Bankrate conducted an examination of places to retire, North Carolina made the list at number six. The rating cited the following as primary reasons why NC is a great place to retire:

  • Taxes
  • Weather
  • Cost of living
  • The economy
  • And more…

Why North Carolina is a Great Place to Retire

North Carolina has many amazing things going for it.

  1. Community – North Carolina boasts a large diversity of people and friendly communities.
  2. Cost of living – Rent and homes have low prices and taxes are low, as well. This allows your retirement fund to last longer.

  4. Economy – Although some areas of the country are struggling, North Carolina has a strong economy with great education and technology, drawing in people looking for opportunity.

Negative Factors to Consider

Every place has its downside, and North Carolina is no different. Here are a few things you may want to consider if contemplating spending your retirement in NC:

  1. Crime – The higher-than-average crime rate is mostly due to Lumberton and Oxford. Other areas are generally safer.
  2. Hurricanes – Anywhere on the coast puts you at risk for these nasty storms, but the farther inland you are, the less likely you will be hit by one, although it will impact local weather.
  3. Seasonal Weather – The change in seasons isn’t as severe as in other northernmost states, but if your dreams are of warm sunny beaches all year round, NC might not be the best fit.

Best Cities to Retire In

Within North Carolina, there are many wonderful areas to consider. Here are a few cities and what they have to offer:

  1. Highlands – This scenic area has a low population, except during tourist season. If you are looking for a more isolated experience, consider this town in the mountains.
  2. Chapel Hill – Bustling with artists, music, and dining experiences, Chapel Hill has something to offer for everyone.
  3. Davidson – This is a lakeside town that offers that laidback feel but is also close to Charlotte, in case you need to get that big-city feeling once in a while.
  4. Asheville – Into craft beer? Asheville offers that and more! Art and music are a big deal here, as well.

When considering a move to North Carolina, you may be curious about what the people are like there. Local culture is an important aspect of an area. You want to find a local community that melds well with your lifestyle and interests.

A Historical Adventure

As a coastal state, North Carolina has a rich and storied history. In New Bern, for example, you can visit old mansions and beautiful gardens. Edenton has an interesting history as well, being one of the areas where “tea parties” protesting taxes were held, most people just think this happened in Boston Massachusetts.

Explore the Arts

North Carolina isn’t just great for history buffs, however. There is also a rich arts scene.

  • In 1964, North Carolina established an arts council.
  • Public funds are used for grants in the arts scene, and the role of arts in the state has been greatly expanded.
  • The North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh hosts over 5,000 pieces of art.

A Beautiful Mix of People

North Carolina has a diverse mixture of people, as well. Camping enthusiasts, fishermen, and technology buffs all mingle together throughout the state. No matter where you go, you encounter communities of all kinds.

People types can be unofficially broken down by area:

  • Those who live in central North Carolina are stereotypical “bless your heart” Southerners. They are friendly and always willing to lend a hand.
  • If you prefer the conservative scene, check out the reserved residents of eastern North Carolina and the outer banks. Their attitude may be a bit rougher, but they are generally trusting
  • Western mountains – This is where Native Americans and Appalachian dwellers live. They hold tight to tradition, providing an interesting look at how life has developed in North Carolina.
  • Southern North Carolina – This is where beach life and tourism thrive. If you like to keep busy or enjoy the shoreline, this area is for you.
  • Fort Bragg and surrounding area – Those who are in the military or supporting civilians live in this area.

Here Is All 10 of the BEST Moving Straps

Pro Tip: Shoulder Dolly VS Forearm Forklift

There are two different types of moving strap products available today.

  1. Shoulder Dolly – this moving strap is designed to have the straps be worn over the shoulders and the weight will be focused directly on them. Typically a shoulder dolly can hold more weight because your shoulders have more strength to them. You will be able to pick up and control more weight with this type of strap. These straps are traditionally more expensive and requires more effort to put on than forearm straps.
  2. Forearm Forklift – this moving strap is designed to have the straps worn on the forearms and the weight will be directly focused on them. Typically a forearm strap will not be able to hold as much weight because your forearms are not as strong as your shoulders. You will still be able to pick up large items and control them but not as easily or heavy as shoulder dolly straps. Putting on forearm forklift straps are generally easier and are less expensive than shoulder dolly straps.

These product names are typically referred to as the brand that manufactures them but competing products can be used interchangeably. The function of these two products is essentially the same but how they are designed are drastically different on your body.

Why We Like These Moving Straps

These are forearm lifting straps NOT shoulder straps and are the original patented adjustable lifting straps designed for this purpose. The “Forearm Forklift” moving straps are one of the biggest brand names in this space and have a stellar reputation within the industry. Be careful when purchasing competing products that don’t carry the official “Forearm Forklift” name as they are typically knock off straps with inferior quality.

Similar to shoulder straps these forearm lifting straps allows 2 people to lift and move furniture, appliances and other heavy objects easily with maximum control to reduce damage to the object or property. The “Forearm Forklift” is designed to encourage proper lifting techniques and reduce back injuries due to heavy and repetitive lifting for both professionals and DIY movers. Where Are The Best Places To Live In Utah?

Utah is a big state, spanning over 84,000 square miles of majestic landscapes and interesting places to live. Although there was no way to cover every one of these places in this guide, we did our best to provide you with an overview of some of the most popular places to move to in the state.

In no particular order…

Salt Lake City

Just 16 miles from the Great Salt Lake of Utah is the state capital, Salt Lake City. Around 193,000 people call SLC home and although just under half of the residents here identify as Mormon, it has a surprisingly diverse and artsy feel, especially in the vibrant downtown area.

Salt Lake City overview in the night

Salt Lake City is a nature lover’s paradise. Not only are the saline waters of the Great Salt Lake just a quick hike or drive away, but there’s also incredible canyons, mountains, and desert landscapes within easy reach. Outdoor activities are popular all year round here, from hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and sailing during the warmer months, to alpine skiing and snowboarding as well as Nordic skiing and backcountry skiing during the wintertime.

There are some fantastic restaurants, cool cafes, and trendy galleries downtown, and despite the religious prevalence here, there’s a pretty happening nightlife scene too.

There’s something for everyone in Salt Lake City; whether you’re a family looking for great schools and a safe community, a young 20 something looking to make friends and have fun, or a retiree looking for the perfect place to spend your golden years.

Salt Lake City is a great place to live, but it doesn’t come cheap. You’ll have to pay for the amenities it has to offer, with the median price for a family home across the city coming in at a hefty $420,000.

Park City

Affluent Park City sits towards the east of Salt Lake City in Summit County. Home to just under 8,000 people, there’s a close-knit community vibe here and people tend to know their neighbors.

Park City is the home of the world-famous Sundance Film Festival, and the city transforms itself every January to welcome visitors from across the world. It’s also a popular spot with A-listers all year-round, and celebrity sightings are pretty common here.

It’s a beautiful city to look at, framed by the stunning Wasatch Mountain Range and next door to the hugely popular Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley Resort, as well as the Utah Olympic Park, which hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics. Skiing and snowboarding are big business here, and the town sees visitors pile in from all corners of the globe during the ski season.

Park City is a highly desirable area to live, and this means property in the city doesn’t come cheap. The median home price here is a staggering $868,000.

Snyderville

Just a short drive outside of Salt Lake City is the charming commuter town of Snyderville. Despite being so close to the capital, there’s a peaceful, rural vibe here, and residents get the best of both worlds when it comes to living out in nature, yet being close to the action.

Families particularly love Snyderville due to its outstanding public school system, the second-best in the entire state. The crime rate is also reassuringly low, and with a population of just 6,200 people, there’s a close-knit community feel.

Snyderville is another area that comes with a hefty price tag; the average family home here costs around $695,000.

Logan

The city of Logan, 82 miles north of Salt Lake City, is home to Utah State University, so there’s a cool college town vibe and a colorful cultural scene here. Around 51,000 people call Logan home, and since the city is spread out over 16.5 square miles, things never seem too crowded.

Logan has ample shopping, dining, and entertainment opportunities, and there are tons of social groups, clubs, and societies to join. Like in much of Utah, the Mormon church plays a huge role here, but there’s also a healthy diversity, so you’ll be made to feel welcome no matter what your beliefs.

Outdoor recreation is popular with the locals, and there are great hiking and biking trails that are accessible from the center of town so there’s no need to jump in your car to see the great outdoors.

Logan is a super safe place to live, with a crime rate way below the US national average. Despite it being a safe and desirable area, property in Logan is surprisingly affordable as compared to many of the other areas on our list. The median home value in Logan is $242,000.

Kaysville

Situated in between Salt Lake City and Ogden is the popular city of Kaysville. It’s home to just over 30,000 people, and has one of the lowest unemployment rates of anywhere in Utah. The job market is particularly strong here and many residents of Salt Lake City are making the move here to chase favorable property prices and advance their careers.

Kaysville is a relatively conservative area, popular with families who move here for the fantastic public schools, as well as the super safe neighborhoods. Homes in Kaysville are still expensive, but certainly more affordable than some others on our list. The median home price is $320,000.

How Much Does It Cost To Live In Utah?

For most of us, the cost of living is a serious consideration when deciding where to move to.

Overall, Utah tends to be a little pricier than most places in the US. The cost of living is around 10% higher here, but a large part of that figure is down to the higher property prices.

Food and Groceries

The good news is that groceries are moderately cheaper than the national average in the Beehive State, coming in at around 6.8% cheaper.

picture of Family with shopping cart in Utah supermarket store

Utilities

Utilities, including electricity, natural gas and other fuels also come in lower than the national average by about 5.4%.

Transportation

Transportation costs, including but not limited to vehicle maintenance, gasoline, insurance and mass transit come in at 8.8% below the national average.

Healthcare and Medical

Healthcare costs, including dental visits, doctor appointments, and hospital stays are also surprisingly affordable, coming in at only 2.7% above the national average for access to one of the nation’s best healthcare systems.

Taxes

The basic rate of sales tax in Utah is currently 4.7%, although local areas impose their own taxes too, so the effective rate is actually more like 5.9%-8.7%, depending on where you live. The state also operates a ‘flat tax’ system, where everyone pays the same rate of income tax, just less than 5%.

Is Utah A Good Place To Retire?

Utah consistently ranks as one of the best places in the country to relocate for retirement. In terms of taxes, it’s certainly not the cheapest state to move to, but it’s not the most expensive either. Presuming retirees can overcome the large cost of housing, they stand to save big in may other categories.

picture of Group of retired friends support concept

The Beehive State taxes Social Security benefits as well as withdrawals from retirement accounts, although over 65’s can claim a percentage of this back through a special government scheme. The average property tax is just 0.66%, and the Utah State government charges zero inheritance tax too.

There are so many other great reasons to retire in the Beehive State besides just taxes. Utah has one of the very best life expectancy rates in America, a low overall cost of living for retirees, and an extremely low crime rate, not to mention incredible natural beauty, endless opportunities for outdoor adventures and plenty of ways to keep fit during your golden years.

What Are The People And Culture Like In Utah?

Utah is most famous for its large Mormon community. 62% of Utah’s 3.2 million residents identify as members of the Church of Latter-Day Saints (LDS). That being said, the state is still a pretty welcoming place no matter what your beliefs are, and plenty of people claim to have a different religion or no faith at all.

The high population of LDS churchgoers means that there’s a pretty strong sense of community involvement in Utah, and family life is at the forefront for most people. The Beehive State also has the highest birth rate, the lowest death rate, and the youngest population of anywhere in the entire USA.

Activities like drinking and smoking are a little more taboo here than most places in the US (which goes a long way to explain the low mortality rate and healthy population) but in recent years the laws have relaxed a little when it comes to drinking in bars and purchasing alcohol in designated liquor stores.

picture of Elderly Father and mature son are saluting with the beer in front of the grill in their house backyard on a beautiful day.

Utah overall is a pretty conservative state, with the majority of the population voting republican in every recent election. That being said, the state capital of Salt Lake City is a pretty liberal and progressive place to be. They claim one of the largest LGBT communities in America and there’s a hip and edgy arts scene here too.

Utah is also known for its outdoorsy types, and it’s no wonder with the number of soaring mountain peaks, the vast swathes of desert, and lush pine forests that cover the   Beehive State.

One thing that can surprise new Utah residents is the distinct lack of diversity across the majority of the state. Around 91% of the population here is white, so if living in a culturally diverse state is important to you, Utah may not be the best choice.

Some Of The Coolest Things To Do In Utah

There’s so much to see and do across the Beehive State. We’ve put together a list of our favorites to get you inspired.

The Sundance Film Festival

Easily the most famed event of the Utah calendar, the Sundance Film Festival sees film lovers from around the globe gather in Park City to celebrate independent films and theatre performances. This is one of the biggest film festivals in the world, with around 50,000 attendees every year and an absolutely electric atmosphere. The Dark Arts Festival

This annual festival in Salt Lake City’s legendary dance club, Area 51, is a three-day event featuring live music, dance, art, fashion, and quirky vendors. It’s a celebration of gothic and alternative culture that encourages attendees to let out their ‘dark side’ in what is normally a pretty vanilla state.

Bryce Canyon National Park

One of America’s most famous national parks, Bryce Canyon has a landscape that feels otherworldly. It’s famous for its deep red ‘hoodoos’- rock formations in the shape of towering spires.

You could easily spend a full week exploring the 145 square kilometer park; there are tons of activities to do here, like hiking, rock climbing, biking, camping, and trail running just to name a few. Make sure to bring your camera and snap a photo around sunrise or sunset when the light dances mysteriously across the beautifully bizarre landscape.

Zion National Park

Down in southwestern Utah, the 229 square mile large national park is home to Zion Canyon, which runs a staggering 15 miles in length and is over 2,500 ft deep. The canyon is made of Navajo Sandstone which gives it a reddish tan color that contrasts beautifully with the green foliage which blankets the ground. It’s also a great spot for wildlife watching. There are almost 290 different species of birds living here, as well as 75 types of mammals and 32 different varieties of reptiles.

Temple Square

Admission is free, and there’s also a gourmet rooftop restaurant with incredible views of the downtown.

The Pros And Cons Of Living In Utah

Now that we’ve taken a look at what Utah has to offer new residents, let’s examine some of the pros and cons of moving to the Beehive State.

Pros

  • A Strong Economy – Despite the Coronavirus pandemic, Utah’s economy remains relatively robust, with one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation and a strong job market.
  • Incredible Natural Beauty – With an impressive 5 national parks, Utah is one of the most geographically diverse and beautiful states in the nation. There are tons of outdoor activities here, from some of the country’s best ski resorts to epic canyons and otherworldly desert landscapes.
  • Lack of Traffic – It’s not often you find a state that hasn’t got a serious traffic problem, but since Utah is sparsely populated and there’s plenty of space to go around, traffic jams of a severe nature a relatively rare in the Beehive State.
  • Low Crime Rate – Thanks in part to the high percentage of religious residents, the overall crime rate in Utah is reassuringly low. Even in Salt Lake City, the statistics are good compared with other metropolises of its size.
  • Great Stargazing – The Beehive State is also famed for its incredible stargazing opportunities. The lack of light pollution and high elevation of places like Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park makes them the perfect spots for an unforgettable view of the heavens.

Cons

  • Expensive Housing – Utah’s property prices are sky-high compared with much of the rest of the nation. If you’re moving in from a cheaper part of the country, you may struggle to find an affordable place to call home.
  • Lack of Diversity – The vast majority, over 90%, of Utah’s population is white, and even the bigger cities can feel a little whitewashed and bland in terms of culture and ethnic diversity.
  • Conservative Views – While some people love the typical conservative Mormon lifestyle, others may find it hard to fit in if they’re of a different faith or not religious at all. Religious values play a pretty large role in day to day life, and things like drugs, alcohol, and alternative lifestyle choices are often more frowned upon than in other parts of the country. Things are beginning to change though, and overall Utah is a pretty welcoming state no matter who you are or where you come from.

The beautiful New England state of Vermont is one of the most picturesque states in the US. Its name translates to the ‘Green Mountain State’, although throughout the year there’s a real rainbow of colors as summer turns to fall and winter gives way to spring.

One of the most interesting things about this quaint little state is its moderately low population, which right now is less than 625,000 people. To put that in perspective, the city of Philadelphia alone has over 1.5 million residents.

Although this makes Vermont a quaint and quiet state, it is not without a distinct vibe all of its own, with small-town hospitality prevalent at every turn. If you’re looking for an escape from the rat race, Vermont could be the perfect choice for those seeking a tranquil way of life away from the hustle and bustle of city living.

But before you pack up your bags and hit the road, let’s dive in and find out everything you need to know about moving to Vermont.

Where Are The Best Places To Live In Vermont?

Yes, we know this is largely subjective, but we’ve done our best to provide you with an assortment of some of the most sought-after areas for various reasons.

Vermont is packed full of small but vibrant cities as well as quaint little towns and villages. It’s also statistically the safest state in the country, so wherever you choose, you’re certain to be a winner.

Let’s take a look at some of the best places to call home in the Green Mountain State.

Montpelier

Montpelier is the capital of Vermont, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s all bright lights, big city. Montpelier actually has the smallest population of any state capital in the US, with less than 10,000 residents.

picture of Montpelier, Vermont, USA town skyline at twilight.

For people who love a quiet life but still want plenty of entertainment options in a place with a small-town vibe, Montpelier could be a great option. The downtown area is a charming mix of historical buildings, quaint little book stores, and coffee shops, as well as interesting museums and galleries. There’s a strong music and arts scene here for such a small place, with plenty of opportunities to catch live bands on the weekends.

To add to its appeal, the Winooski River flows right through the heart of the city, and there are countless walking trails extending off into the surrounding countryside.

Although it’s a relatively quiet town, that doesn’t mean there aren’t enough jobs. There’s a low unemployment rate here, and a median income above the national average. The average home in Montpelier costs around $248k.

Burlington

Burlington is the largest and most populated city in Vermont, so it makes sense that it’s also seen as the most cosmopolitan place in the state.  This energetic city sits on the shores of beautiful Lake Champlain, and looks like something straight out of a postcard.

There’s a real vibrancy to this city, and during the spring and summer months, the streets come alive with colorful outdoor concerts and local festivals. The downtown area of Church Street Marketplace is full of historical buildings, interesting independent shops and restaurants, as well as plenty of bars offering live entertainment. Even though it may feel like traditional, small-town America, there’s so much to see and do here.

There are plenty of green spaces too, like Leddy Park, which is the perfect place for picnicking and family days out. There’s even a beach on the shore of the lake, and countless cycling and hiking trails, making Burlington a great option for outdoorsy types.

The school system is also well renowned here, so it’s a popular city for families relocating to Vermont. Another bonus is that it’s only 45 miles from the Canadian border, making day trips up there a breeze.

Unemployment in and around the city currently sits comfortably below the national average, and there are several major companies providing ample jobs to the local community. The median home price here is slightly higher than Montpelier, at just under $300k.

picture of Burlington, Vermont, USA at Church Street Marketplace.

South Burlington

That brings us to South Burlington, which is, you guessed it, just a few miles south of its big brother Burlington. It’s the home of the headquarters of the famous (and delicious) Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, and also boasts Vermont’s biggest mall, the University Mall.

It’s population sits right around 18,773 people, most of whom, according to census data, seems to be doing well. The unemployment rate here is consistently low, and the majority of residents own their own homes.

South Burlington has a happy mixture of age demographics, with as you might expect, plenty of retirees, but also a growing younger community, with many young professionals moving in from elsewhere around the state and further afield.

The area has a tightly packed suburban feel, with plenty of restaurants, coffee shops, and bars, plus some wide open green spaces and well kept public parks. Despite the suburban landscape, it’s also a relatively walkable city, meaning that there are quite a few opportunities to leave the car at home and take your route by foot.

The median home value here is considerably cheaper than Burlington, at just $268k, making it a great choice if you don’t mind a short commute into the larger city.

Vergennes

The little city of Vergennes ticks a lot of “boxes” in terms of being an ideal location to move to. It sits between Lake Chaplain and the Green Mountains, and is close to the city of Burlington and the prestigious Middlebury College, making it both scenic and tranquil while having easy access to a wide range of amenities.

The downtown area is a gorgeous mishmash of colonial buildings, cute little bars and restaurants, and independent stores. In the heart of the central zone is the beautifully restored City Hall and Vergennes Opera House, which was opened way back in 1897. Today, you can still catch a concert or movie here anytime throughout the year

It may be small (just 2 square miles in size) but Vergennes was actually Vermont’s first-ever city. This means the place is steeped in history and has many tales to tell from the past.

The city has the 6th highest median income in the state, as well as an unemployment rate below the national average. A home here is much more affordable than the likes of Burlington and Woodstock, costing an average of around $220k.

Jericho

Named after the famous biblical city, Jericho is another great example of a typical, too-pretty-to-be-true, New England town. It’s located close to Burlington, just 30 minutes away, so if the quiet life gets too much, you won’t be too far from the action.

That being said, there’s still plenty to do in Jericho. There’s a great selection of cute little cafes, bars, and restaurants, as well as some incredible hiking trails that extend into the surrounding nature. Jericho has three parks that are perfect for picnics and family gatherings. In fact, Jericho has been ranked as one of the best towns to raise a family in Vermont.

During the summer months, there’s an awesome farmers market where you can buy local produce and sample local delicacies such as farm fresh cheeses and of course, maple syrup.

The unemployment rate here is the 2nd lowest across the whole state, perhaps due to its proximity to Burlington. The average house price here is currently $264k.

Woodstock

Woodstock is easily one of the most picture-perfect towns in Vermont, and it’s certainly one of the highest-ranked places to live in the state.

It’s a little gem of a town, filled with old school charm that beats most places in the rest of the state. It’s been named the “quintessential New England village”, and it’s easy to see why. There’s a classic Vermont style covered bridge smack bang in the center of downtown, and the streets are lined with beautifully restored Georgian and Greek revival homes. There’s even a village green which serves as a meeting point in the middle of town.

Woodstock tops the charts in Vermont in terms of the low unemployment rate and average annual salaries, and so it’s also the most expensive place to buy a home in the state, with an average price of just under $400k.

picture of woodstock vermont

Waterbury

Waterbury is located in Washington Country, slap bang in the center of Vermont. The town itself also encapsulates a village of the same name.

While it’s a super charming place to be during the summer, Waterbury really comes alive during the winter months, as it’s located right on the edge of Vermont’s ski country. There’s a choice of several great skiing and boarding sites within a stone’s throw of the town.

Waterbury is also home to the Ben and Jerry’s factory, so even if you’re just stopping in for a visit, make sure you take a tour of this now world-famous ice cream mecca.

Waterbury is such a peaceful little place that it boats one of the lowest crime rates in the whole of the state, making it statistically one of the safest places to live in the country.

An average home here costs $234,100, so it’s one of the most affordable places to live on our list.

WE MOVED TO VERMONT!

As born and raised Southerners, the prospect of moving to Vermont with 3 teenagers was ambitious to say the least!  Add doing a complete Career Change for both of us, one might think we were crazy! Crazy and ambitious turned out to be the best move of our life!

Todd put a hold on his 26 year career in television and Kristie gave up her own small business to purchase the Stone Hill Inn, a 9 room luxury bed and breakfast in Stowe, VT.  We loved the idea of moving our family to Vermont. We were both enamored with New England and Vermont is the Pinnacle state in the region in our opinion. Our kids now attend one of the top schools in the United States, Stowe High School.

The benefits for our family are ample. From the aforementioned great schools to the air and water quality, the four seasons with abundant outdoor activities and festivals, the small town charm, the sense of community, the close proximity of nationally recognized Universities, the focus on local farm to market goods and production of organic food, the slower pace of living with less stress, the lack of traffic, and above all the unmatched glorious natural beauty of the state! Come for a visit and stay with us!  You will never want to leave because Vermont is not only a great state, but also a way of life!

How Is The Job Market In Vermont?

You could be forgiven for thinking that since Vermont has such a small population, the job market is probably struggling. In fact, such a small population can be a good thing, meaning less competition, and can work in your favor when it comes to finding work.

For example, Vermont has an impressively low unemployment rate of 2.8% which is considerably less than the national average. A strong indication that anyone with any talent is scooped up for work right away.

When it comes to pay, Vermont scores pretty high in that category as well. The state-enforced minimum wage is $10.50 per hour, which is well above the federal minimum wage, so it’s an especially great place to earn money for those starting out in their careers or entering into low skilled work.

Top Industries across Vermont

Some of the most prevalent industries across Vermont are manufacturing and production related, especially in areas such as breweries, ice cream manufacturing (people love Ben & Jerry’s), logging, coffee & tea manufacturing and of course, maple syrup, which is one of Vermont’s biggest exports.

Quick Breakdown of Top Industries (in no particular order, according to Vermont.gov):

  • Health Care
  • Social Assistance
  • Government
  • Full service restaurants
  • Educational services
  • Professional, scientific and educational services
  • Consulting and management
  • Manufacturing and production
  • Logging
  • Breweries

Employers

The largest employer in the state is the University of Vermont in Shelburne, which employs a total of 5,380 people at last count.

Coming in at a close second place is tech giant IBM, which is based in the village of Essex Junction. They employ around 5,300 workers in the field of semiconductor component development and manufacturing.

Fletcher Allen Health Care is another large employer, with currently around 4,835 employees. They, like many of the top employers in the state, are based in Burlington.

Also based in Burlington is restaurant operator Bruegger’s Enterprises Inc, which employs 2,400 people from their headquarters.

How Is The Vermont Real Estate Market?

When it comes to homes currently on the market, zillow.com says the median price of a house in Vermont is currently $259,000, which is up 3.6% over the past year.

Experts predict this number will keep on climbing upwards, as there’s some serious housing construction happening around the state, especially up in the north around cities like Burlington and Montpelier. These larger, newly built homes are taking over the majority of the 1980’s builds, meaning prices are set to rise.

If you’re looking to buy a house in the main hub of the action, Burlington, then expect to pay more. The average price of a home at the end of 2019 was $328,856, which is up 3.4% from the previous year.

VT Real Estate Statistics and Facts:

  • 70% of residents are homeowners
  • 30% of residents are renters
  • 50% of real estate is represented by single family homes
  • Total appreciation rate of property since 2000 = 102.8%, averaging 3.67% a year

The Best Time to Buy a Home In Vermont

The Vermont real estate market has been hot the last year, making it a “seller’s market” with increased competition for attractive homes that move fast and command higher prices.

That said, capitalizing on certain seasonal trends may give some of the power back to home buyers at the negotiation table. Based on past data, home buyers looking for a better deal should avoid shopping for a home during the competitive summer months, and instead postpone their search until fall and winter when sales prices tend to begin a downward trend.

How Much Does It Cost To Live In Vermont?

Renting vs Buying a Home

So far we’ve taken a look at the cost of homeownership, but what if you’re looking to rent? The great news is that renting in Vermont is pretty cheap, with a one-bedroom apartment in the hotspot of Burlington costing just $953 per month. That’s way below the national average of $1220. Move away from the city and head over to smaller Montpelier, and a 1 bedroom apartment there costs an average of only $737 a month. Not bad!

Healthcare

Healthcare is important, especially for those with families or who already have medical conditions to contend with. The good news is that health-related expenses in VT come in at 7.7% above the national average.

Utilities

Utilities include heating, cooling, gas, electric, cable/satellite and other necessities for running a home. According to data collected by BestPlaces.net, utility costs as compared to the national average come in at 17.4% higher.

Transportation

This includes public transportation as well as gas/diesel. Those who normally spend a lot on travel and transportation can save big, with the costs of transportation in the state coming in at 22.1% below the national average.

Taxes

There’s no way to sugar coat it, Vermont’s taxes are pretty high. In fact, Vermont is the state with the third-highest tax burden for its residents. Unlike some states, high earners are taxed much higher than low-income earners, so if you’re not on a huge wage, there’s probably not much to worry about.

Property taxes are also pretty high, so make sure to factor this in when planning your home buying budget.

There is a silver lining though; sales tax in Vermont is low, at just 6%. That’s significantly below the national average.

Food and Groceries

Food is a necessity we can’t go without, making it a key component of budgeting for a new move. As compared to the national average, grocery expenses in Vermont are about 6.7% higher than the national average. Whether or not this will be an increased cost for you will depend on your current location.

picture of Family with shopping cart in supermarket store

Summary Regarding Expenses

Although the costs of many categories are higher, those that move here can expect to save a whopping 11.5% on housing and 22% on transportation, two very significant expenses that, coupled with competitive salaries in the state, can balance things out quite nicely.

Is Vermont A Good Place To Retire?

Due to higher taxes in Vermont, many retirees may be put off moving to the Green Mountain State.

It may be a reasonable price to pay though as retiring in Vermont comes with a number of other added benefits. There’s a real opportunity to enjoy outdoor living and embrace nature in places like the Green Mountains, Lake Champlain and, in winter, the many ski resorts.

Many retirees will also love the slower pace of life that comes with living in a less populated state. Even the cities manage to retain a real small town feel, and people tend to know their neighbors well, which isn’t the case in many places elsewhere.

What Are The People And Culture Like In Vermont?

People in Vermont are well known for being friendly, helpful and welcoming, even to newcomers moving in from elsewhere. There’s a real sense of home-state pride, with many families having remained in the state for several generations.

picture of Elderly Father and mature son are saluting with the beer in front of the grill in their house backyard on a beautiful day.

One of the most wonderful things about Vermont is its distinct lack of over-commercialization. It’s one of the few places in the US that hasn’t been taken over by an abundance of fast food chains and Walmart stores. In fact, one of Montpelier’s claims to fame is that it’s the only US state capital without a McDonalds. Instead, there’s a much bigger focus on local, independent businesses, which tend to thrive within the state.

Vermont overall is a generally liberal and left-leaning state, which makes sense since Bernie Sanders held office as Congressman and Senator there for years. When it comes to social issues, Vermont is often at the liberal forefront. In 2000, it became the very first state to allow civil unions for same-sex couples, and later went on to legalize same-sex marriage in 2009.

Some Of The Coolest Things To Do In Vermont

Ben & Jerry’s Factory Tour

This tour is every ice cream lover’s dream. Take a tour around the factory in Waterbury, and get a behind- the- scenes look into how it’s all made. You’ll even get to see the “Flavour Graveyard”, where actual tombstones memorialize discontinued flavors. Perhaps the best part of the whole tour is (you guessed it) the samples, which they liberally dish out.

Cabot Creamery Visitor Center

For another delicious sampling of Vermont’s famous produce, head over the Cabot Creamery visitor’s center, where you can learn all about their cheese-making process and taste their full range of cheeses alongside some special limited edition cheddars and other artisan products from the local area.

Brattleboro Farmers Market

Vermont is full of farmer’s markets, and the Battleboro Farmer’s Market is one of the very best. Every week more than 50 vendors gather to sell their fresh, local produce. This is one of the best places to pick up some local maple syrup, as well as artisan dairy products, free-range meats and fresh, local eggs. Top off your visit by stopping by the historic Creamery Covered Bridge which is just next door.

Covered Bridges

While we’re on the subject, let’s look at Vermont’s famous collection of covered bridges. There are more than 100 of these mostly mid 19th century bridges dotted around the state, with the oldest one, Pulp Mill Bridge in Middlebury, dating back to 1820. The most famous and best example of these bridges is the Cornish-Windsor covered bridge that crosses the Connecticut River between Cornish, New Hampshire, and Windsor, Vermont. Spotting these landmarks adds a little more fun to any road trip through Vermont.

Middlebury Tasting Trail

This 5 mile tasting trail takes you through the stunning scenery of the Green Mountains, while you sample wine, beer, and liquor from in and around the town of Middlebury. There’s seven in total; Lincoln Peak Vineyards, Woodchuck Cider House, Otter Creek Brewery, Whistlepig Distillery, Stonecutter Spirits, The Appalachian Gap Distillery and Drop In Brewing. In order to make sure you don’t miss out, consider visiting on a Saturday, when all seven producers are open at the same time. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon, especially if you’re not the designated driver.

Rock of Ages

This massive granite quarry is an incredible sight to behold, so incredible in fact that it was once used as a location for a Star Treck movie. After you’ve seen the granite extracted from deep inside the earth in front of your very eyes, you can take a tour through the processing plant and see the granite transformed into various new forms. There’s even a granite bowling alley to enjoy after the tour.

Lake Champlain

Lake Champlain is a huge, beautiful lake that spans across two states and even dips into Canada. Most of its 587 miles of shoreline is situated in Vermont, where visitors come in hoards to enjoy life by the water. It’s a haven for kayaking, fishing, sailing and bird watching. The lake even has its own version of the Loch Ness Monster, a 20-foot serpent-like creature called “Champy” who may or may not be lurking in the deep waters.

Simon Pearce Ceramic and Glass Blowing Workshop

See talented craftsmen create works of art, blowing glass and sculpting ceramics in the basement of a restored 19th century mill. The building itself is still powered by the Ottauquechee River which runs by it’s side. After seeing the workshop demonstrations, head upstairs to the showroom where you can browse the beautiful glass and ceramic pieces displayed there. There’s also a great restaurant serving up delicious local food that overlooks the waterfalls.

The Pros And Cons Of Living In Vermont

Now that we’ve taken a look at all Vermont has to offer, let’s cover the pros and cons of moving to the Green Mountain State.

Pros

  • Incredible Scenery – Vermont has some stunning landscapes to explore, whatever the season. Many locals say their two favorite seasons are fall, when you can witness the famous red and orange colors that blanket much of the state, and winter, when the snowfall across the rivers, lakes and mountains looks like something straight out of a fairy tale.
  • Less Traffic – One of the major advantages of living in a sparsely populated state is that you spend less time waiting in traffic jams. Even in places like Burlington, the largest city, being stuck in traffic for more than a few minutes is a pretty rare occurrence.
  • Less Commercialization – Although Vermont has a few big box stores, strip malls, and fast food outlets, on the whole, the state’s focus is on supporting smaller, independent family-run businesses.
  • One of the Safest States in America – Vermont has such low crime rates; it’s consistently at the top of the charts for safety. This makes it a great place for families, retirees and pretty much anyone looking for a secure and safe place to live.
  • Low Housing and Transportation Costs – Those buying a home instead of renting may benefit most, as will those that typically spend a lot on transportation or commuting.
  • Low Unemployment Rates – If you’re seeking employment or opting for a career change, VT has a lot of opportunities and a low unemployment rate that is favorable.

Cons

  • Cold Weather – Though it makes for a great ski season, the temperatures can drop pretty severely during the winter months. Snowfall can be heavy, so be prepared to dig out your car and driveway at least a couple of times a year.
  • Higher Taxes – Income tax rates in Vermont are some of the highest in the country, and property taxes are also pretty high. Even social security and pensions are taxable in the Green Mountain State.
  • No Major Airports – The only major airport in the state is Burlington, however, flights out of here are still pretty limited, with connections to only 11 Cities and Toronto. The closest international hubs are Boston and New York, so be prepared for higher flight prices and additional layovers.

Vermont Fun Facts & Strange Laws

Strange Laws

Every state has a few odd and outdated laws that bamboozle both residents and visitors. Let’s take a look at what Vermont has to offer.

  • It’s against the law to take your clothes off in public, but leaving your house, car or place of work when you’re already naked is totally fine. Apparently, some of Vermont’s less prudish residents still take advantage of this weird law, usually during the warmer months.
  • Billboards have been banned in Vermont since 1968. Residents say they like keeping their landscapes free of all that advertising pollution, and we personally agree.
  • It’s illegal to paint a landscape during wartime. Lawmakers way back when wanted to avoid any gruesome scenes being passed down through history.
  • It’s also against the law to paint a horse–even when it’s not wartime. Painting or disguising your horse, as well as your donkeys or mules, is a no-go in Vermont.
  • All residents must bathe every Saturday night in the city of Barre. Hopefully, they like to bathe on other days, too.
  • It’s illegal to ban clotheslines in Vermont. We’re not sure how this law came about, but you can rest easy knowing you can air-dry your clothes whenever you choose to in the Green Mountain state.
  • Putting doves in the freezer is illegal. Although Vermont’s hunting laws are pretty relaxed, if you’re caught with a freezer full of doves you’ll find yourself on the wrong side of the law.
  • Women who want to get false teeth must have written permission from their husbands. We’re guessing in the state that prides itself on “Freedom and Unity”, this one is never enforced.
  • It’s illegal to buy alcohol at a liquor store with an out of state license. Visitors have to show a ‘liquor ID” if they want to buy booze. Luckily, bars and restaurants don’t have this restriction, but it can take some visitors by surprise.

Fun Facts

To wrap up our overview of moving to Vermont, let’s look at some fun facts from the Green Mountain State.

  • Vermont produces the most maple syrup of any state in the US. It’s also totally delicious!
  • The workers at Ben & Jerry’s give the leftover ice cream to local farmers who feed it to their pigs. The pigs, of course, absolutely love it, except for one flavor: mint and Oreo cookie. Apparently, pigs don’t like mint, who knew?!
  • When you look at a ratio of cows to people Vermont has the most dairy cows in the country. That explains all the delicious cheese!
  • Rudyard Kipling lived in Vermont during the 1890s and invented the extraordinary game of snow golf.
  • Up until relatively recently, if residents of Vermont wanted a photo card driver’s license, they had to travel all the way to Montpelier.
  • In the past, Vermont has been claimed by both New Hampshire and New York.
  • Vermont was the only state in the country without a Walmart, that is until the first one was built in 1996.
  • The state capitol building of Vermont, in Montpelier, is one of only a handful to have a real gold dome. A statue of Ceres sits on top of the dome.

Denver

Denver, known as the “Mile High City”, continuously ranks as one of the most desirable cities to live in the US. In fact, just this year US News & World Report ranked Denver as the 2nd best place to live in the country.

Others are certainly taking note; in 2016 the city appeared high in the top 10 fastest growing cities in the country, and in 2019, the metropolitan area of Denver approached a population of almost 3 million.

The area is especially popular among the younger crowd, with hoards of young professionals relocating to this cosmopolitan city each year.

My only regret is that I didn’t move here sooner!

After living in two of the biggest and most expensive cities in the US, moving to Colorado was a breath of fresh air! I’m a publicist (and previously worked in the entertainment industry) and didn’t have a job lined up before I moved but decided to take a leap of faith. In Colorado, people are down to earth and have a great work/life balance. Many are transplants themselves and are just excited to meet others with similar interests and hobbies. Cost of living isn’t as expensive as NY or LA but yes, it’s more than living in Kansas. It’s all relative, I guess. The housing costs have increased over the last several years but word is it’s supposed to level off soon (fingers crossed!) My only regret is that I didn’t move here sooner.”

How Is The Job Market In Colorado?

Unless you won the lotto or inherited a fortune from a long-lost uncle, working for a living is no doubt a reality you’ll be facing in CO.

The good news is that Colorado’s job market is thriving, with 73,000 new positions opening up over 2019 alone. Many people filling these jobs were residents moving in from other states, proving again that Colorado is seen as a particularly desirable state to live and work in.

Jobs vary from low skilled manual labor roles to highly skilled, highly paid positions at top Fortune 500 companies. The capital Denver boasts one of the lowest unemployment rates in the whole country.

Industries

Aerospace

Did you know that Colorado is home to the nation’s second-largest aerospace economy? As it also means that the state’s residents rank among one of the country’s most highly educated workforces in the nation.

picture of airplane jet on maintenance of engine and fuselage check repair in colorado airport hangar.

Nine of the top aerospace contractors in the US operate from within Colorado, along with a huge presence of research and development from NASA and the US Department of Defense.

Tech

Tech companies in Colorado employ hundreds of thousands of highly skilled employees, and new jobs continue to be created daily. Colorado ranks as #6 in the country for it’s concentration of high-tech workers. For example, a recent $350 million satellite production facility at Lockheed Martin’s Waterton Canyon is one example of how the demand for skilled tech workers is continuing to rise across the state. If you’re good behind a keyboard or are a self-proclaimed “geek” ready to nerd out with the latest and greatest innovations, Colorado might feel right at home.

Craft Beer

Sud or dud, if you’re into the diverse craft beer scene you’re in luck. Colorado is famous for its craft beer, and in recent years the industry has grown rapidly. There are currently more than 300 craft breweries in the state, many of them operating on a huge national and international scale. According to a report by Brewers Association, the craft beer industry in the state has the best per capita economic impact of anywhere in the entire country. And hey, if you’re not into making or supporting the making of the beer, at least you can have a drink or two in appreciation.

Cannabis

Up in smoke? Only because the cannabis industry is HOT, HOT, HOT right now. Colorado famously became the first state to legalize the possession and distribution of recreational cannabis, and has since reaped the benefit of a $1 billion dollar industry. Sales of cannabis continue to rise month after month, and the industry employs thousands of people from highly-skilled, high earning positions, to low skilled, lower-paid jobs.

Agriculture

Agriculture is big business in Colorado, with almost half of the states’ land area dedicated to growing and producing fresh produce. While many of these jobs in the agricultural sector require a high level of skill and expertise, the industry also employs a huge amount of low skilled workers and provides a large number of blue-collar jobs.

Top Employers in the State

Within the tech and aerospace industries, the top employers include the likes of Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp, The Boeing Company, Lockheed Martin, United Launch Alliance, and the Sierra Nevada Corporation.

Other major employers from outside these industries include the University of Colorado in Boulder, which employs around 13,300 people currently, as well as the University of Boulder who employs around 4,500 people at last count.

How Is The Colorado Real Estate Market?

After years of steady growth, Colorado’s real estate market continues to trend upwards. This is mainly due to a strong economy across the state, as well as a strong appeal to outsiders to move to the Centennial State; Colorado continues to rank as one of the top places to live in the country. For example, Denver recently took No. 13 in the 40 Best Cities to Live for a Healthy Work-Life Balance.

A great quality of life but at a price!

I would recommend moving to Colorado for the quality of life. You really can’t beat the large city amenities and small town feel of Denver. Not to mention the access to world class skiing and recreation of all sorts within a relatively short distance of the city. All of this comes at a price though, and Denver is becoming increasingly more expensive and harder to afford without dual incomes.”

Chris Michael, Attorney – Ball Morse Lowe PLLC

The word is spreading around the country of Colorado’s promise of a better life, and as the newcomers arrive, the housing market picks up the pace.

The median price of a property listing in Colorado is currently $428,900, while the actual mean price of a sold house is $369,900. Property prices will vary greatly throughout the state. Interestingly, despite Denver being the largest and most populous city in Colorado, it is Boulder which has the highest property prices.

How Much Does It Cost To Live In Colorado?

Aside from purchasing property, how affordable is it to live in Colorado? Sure, moving is exciting, but it’d be a whole lot less nerve-wracking if you were able to figure out a budget in advance.

Let’s take a look at what some of the most common living expenses are like in the state…

Renting vs Buying

According to Apartment List’s data from 2019, the average you could expect to pay for a two-bedroom apartment in Colorado comes in at right around $1,305 per month, which is $130 more than the national average. However, keep in mind this is the “average” state-wide, so there is a lot of flexibility depending on the specific area you’re shopping in.

In Denver, to rent a studio apartment you’d be spending an average of $871 per month, and for a one-bedroom apartment, you’ll need to dig deep in those pockets so come up with an average of $1,064. Boulder is even more expensive, reflecting property prices there, with a studio costing $1,017 per month and a one-bedroom costing $1,158 per month.

Utilities

Tired of expensive utility bills? Interested in reducing your carbon footprint and making a difference with the environment? You’re in luck. A 2017 report from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) stated that Colorado residents consume significantly less energy than the national average.

This is due in part to seasonal advantages as well as the lifestyle habits of the state’s residents. The average monthly utility bill in Colorado is $86.47, noticeably less than the national average of $111.67.

Food

We all have to eat right? Question is…what will it cost you in CO?

The cost of food in Colorado varies depending on where you choose to live. The national average monthly amount spent on groceries is currently $323.72. In comparison, residents of Denver currently spend $337.09, and people living in Colorado Springs spend an average of $348.53 per month, both higher than the national average.

picture of Family with shopping cart in supermarket store

These figures tend to suggest that food is slightly pricier than the national average, but it can also reflect the tastes and grocery shopping habits of Colorado’s residents, with many people choosing to spend more on organic vegetables and grass-fed meats, for example.

Transportation

The average price for a gallon of gas in Colorado is $2.78, according to data from Gas Buddy from May 2019. This is actually slightly below the national average of $2.90 per gallon.

Those who choose not to drive have the option of bus and rail services within Denver, Boulder, and other nearby cities. The average monthly cost of public transport for local services is $114, however, if you are commuting in a wider regional area, the cost rises to an average of $200 per month.

Healthcare

The overall healthcare costs in Colorado are above the national average. According to data from the Health Care Costs Institute, in the Fort Collins metro area you will pay 18% more than the median average, in Denver it’s 13% more, and in Boulder, it’s 6% more.

Things look a little brighter when we look at averages for employees’ insurance coverage contributions. In 2017, data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality showed that Colorado employees had an annual average insurance contribution of $1,375, which is $40 below the national average.

Colorado Taxes

Colorado operates a flat-tax system, meaning that everyone pays the same income tax rate of 4.63% regardless of how much they earn. If you’re in a high paying job this is fantastic news, however, those with lower incomes may struggle.

The base sales tax rate in Colorado is 2.9%, however, some cities and towns add their own taxes, which, to use the example of the upscale ski town of Snowmass Village, can get as high as 10.4%.

Homeowners in Colorado benefit from some of the lowest property tax rates in the country, with an average effective rate of just 0.57%. Interestingly, all property taxes are collected directly by the county of residence, and do not go to the Colorado state government.

In the case of Marijuana, Colorado’s famous new legal recreational activity, the drug is subject to a 2.9% sales tax, the same base rate as all sales tax on other products across the state, as well an additional 15% sales tax and a 15% marijuana excise tax.

Healthy Living

Colorado residents are overwhelmingly active and enjoy a healthy lifestyle, ranking 8th in the country for good health, according to a study conducted by the United Health Foundation.  It also boasts the second-lowest obesity rate in the nation. This is due to the fact that residents are surrounded by countless opportunities to stay fit and healthy, alongside a culture that places a large focus on health and wellness.

Colorado retirees will find themselves surrounded by people who value an active and healthy lifestyle, and this mindset is sure to rub off on newcomers.

Health Care

The state of Colorado has over 100 quality hospitals, some of which boast top national rankings. Outdoor Activities

One great way to embrace a healthy lifestyle in retirement is to stay fit and active in nature, and what better place to partake in outdoor adventures than Colorado? The state boasts four spectacular national parks, including the famous Rocky Mountain National Park, alongside Great Sand Dunes, Black Canyon of the Gunnison and Mesa Verde.

Retirees can embrace the area’s natural beauty by taking regular hikes and joining walking groups with like-minded outdoorsy people.

We love it here! Our company has seen amazing growth in Colorado

We have everything here except an ocean, and that can be achieved through direct flights from Denver International Airport 365 days a year to the Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf of Mexico if you are really in need of an ocean. We have at least six pro sports teams I can think of including the Broncos, Avalanche, Nuggets, Rockies, Colorado Rapids (soccer), and the Denver Outlaws (lacrosse).

We also have world class skiing two hours away 4-5 months a year. World class fly fishing, river rafting, hunting, cross country skiing, mountain biking, hiking, and national forests. We have all four seasons and the summer rarely gets over 95 degrees on the hottest days with very little humidity. Fort Collins and Colorado Springs seems to win or is on the best places to retire list it seems every year.

Invigorating Climate

Colorado boasts not just two, but four beautiful seasons per year. Witness the blanket of wildflowers during the spring, enjoy the warmth of the dry summer sun, see the rich autumnal leaves fall and make the most of the ample snow during the winter ski season. The favorable climate also brings over 300 days of sunshine per year, helping retirees to get outside and make the very most of their golden years.
